The Maine Department of Transportation (MDOT) will be closing I-295 over Veranda Street in Portland on the fourth weekend in April to accommodate the replacement of an aging interstate bridge. MaineDOT’s “Veranda Plan” involves a full closure of the highway around Exit 9 from 7:00 p.m. on Friday, April 22 to 11:00 a.m. on Monday, April 25. Additionally, Route 1 / Veranda Street (under the bridge) will be closed for a full week, from 2:00 p.m. on Monday, April 18 to 2:00 p.m. on Monday, April 25.
The Joint Standing Committee on Environment and Natural Resources (ENR) voted unanimously “ought to pass” on LD 1964, An Act To Update Certain Water Quality Standards and To Reclassify Certain Waters of the State. This bill is part of the triennial review process and implements recommendations of the Board of Environmental Protection (BEP) resulting from its review of the State’s water quality classification system and related water quality standards. As recommended by the board, the bill includes specific updates to certain water quality standards and water quality classifications based on water quality data and the recommendations of the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the Maine Department of Environmental Protection (DEP), and other parties.

Last week, the Joint Standing Committee on Innovation, Development, Economic Advancement, and Business (IDEA) moved forward with a majority report of “ought to pass as amended” (OTP-AM) on LD 1923, An Act To Establish the Maine Space Corporation. This legislation was introduced by Sen. Mattie Daughtry (D-Cumberland). She also introduced the amendment that was passed in the majority report. The Maine State Chamber of Commerce testified in support of LD 1923 and remains supportive of the amended version, which passed through the IDEA committee.
